// about us

Two people,
making code make sense.

Codeprehensible is the Dr. Boyana Boneva & Dr. Kevin Leiss GbR, based in Bensheim. We both come from research, taught ourselves programming through real data problems, and teach it the way we wish we had learned it ourselves.

Career

Since December 1, 2022, I have been working at iOMEDICO (a clinical research institute and CRO in Freiburg) as a project manager in Advanced Technologies. My work covers agile software solutions for collecting, processing, and interactively visualizing data. I keep an eye on current technological developments and integrate innovations that align with our company goals. My toolbox includes Linux, Python, R, and Jira. One focus of my work is implementing AI solutions across the company.

I completed my doctorate in biology in the field of bioinformatics and evolutionary biology in the research group of Prof. Kaessmann (Center for Molecular Biology at Heidelberg University). For my thesis I studied the development and evolution of the mammalian cerebellum at the single-cell level. I applied statistics, computer science, and data science to extract the essence of large datasets and then communicate it clearly in scientific publications and talks. During my school and university years I discovered my passion for programming and teaching.

Free time

When I'm not busy catching up on the latest tech trends or listening to statistics lectures, I like playing console games, cooking tasty international dishes, or relaxing with a cup of richly fragrant espresso.

Career

From November 2022 to January 2024 I worked as a biostatistician at iOMEDICO (a clinical research institute and CRO in Freiburg). My work involved analyzing clinical trials and optimizing analysis processes. I then additionally took on the roles of statistical software developer and software product owner while continuing to work as a biostatistician. Since January 2025 I have been part of the Analytical Systems Engineering team, where software development and DevOps are part of my everyday work. In this role it is essential for me to stay on top of current developments in the tech sector so I can bring state-of-the-art technologies into our systems and processes.

In 2024 I also successfully completed my PhD in biology with a focus on tumor virology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). My thesis was about identifying and characterizing novel cancer-causing pathogens. Since this work generated a lot of complex data, I kept expanding my knowledge of programming and statistics and used it to analyze the data generated in the lab (for example in screenings and single-cell analyses). During my studies I also did a lot of volunteer teaching and worked with students from all over Germany and beyond, which I really enjoyed, for example at the DKFZ Life Science Lab.

Free time

I love organizing things (like planning the next holiday), trying out new tech, playing a round (or two) on the console, building LEGO sets, and conjuring up something out of the ordinary in the kitchen every day. Reading books from all kinds of fields is another passion of mine.
